I can identify the setting within a text.
I can describe a character using the 5 parts of characterization.

Today we talked about the elements of fiction. These elements are the foundation of everything we do with fiction, so you need to learn them well. In order to fully learn what we learned in class you will need to come to English during FLEX time. However, I will provide copies of the Power Points and assignment we did.

Composition Notebook & Personality Recipes

I can use the parts of speech to describe myself.

Part 1: Composition Notebooks
We spent the first part of class setting up our composition notebooks. Your composition notebooks are where you will write your Mustang Minutes and notes. If you were gone, or didn't have you comp book, here are the instructions.
  1. Number the bottom outside corner of each page, front and back.
  2. Title page 1 "My Words"
  3. Below "My Words," write the following rules: never tear pages out, only write on the right side of the page, title and date each writing piece, write to the edge of the paper, write 1/2 page.
  4. Once you are done writing, turn the the very last page of the comp book.
  5. Title the last page "Notes."

After we finished that, we wrote 1/2 page. You, too, should write a story or response to the picture below on page 3 of your comp book. Remember, it needs to be 1/2 page.

Part 2: Personality Recipes

During the second period of class we reviewed parts of speech- specifically verbs, adverbs, nouns, and adjectives.

Next we looked at some recipes to see how they were formatted. Look at some examples by clicking here and then clicking on the yummy looking pictures. Notice the nouns, verbs, adjective, and adverbs in the recipes?

Next we made recipes for our personality. Instead of using actual food  ingredients, our ingredients were things that made us into the people we are such as: family, sports, movies, books, cooking, hiking, awesomeness, energy, and friends.

Create your own personality recipe on page 5 of your comp book. (You can see an example of my personality recipe on the last slide of the Power Point below.)

We spent the rest of the class describing a good classmate. We divided into groups and worked to decide what kind of a person a good classmate is, what a good classmate says and does, and what a good classmate is not. Once we decided what qualities a good classmate has, we voted on our class rules. Here are the rules that we came up with.
